How to enable Agents, Functions, and Tool-calling in Layla

Layla v6 supports local Agents which runs on your device, giving Layla the ability to use tools and communicate with external services.
This article will give an overview of how Agents work in Layla and what you can do with them!
The Agent Mini-app
Agentic functionality can be unlocked in Layla by installing the Agents mini-app, found in the Browse Apps screen.
Download and install the Agents mini-app in Layla. Going into the app, you will see there are a wide variety of pre-created agents that you can use immediately.
These tools are already created and working for you. You don't need to edit them. In fact, you can go back and start a new chat with Layla and they will automatically work!
In the screen above, you can see the Web Reader and DuckDuckGo News Results Agents are activated, bringing you the latest news from the internet!
Layla's agents can do many more things, like scheduling an event in your calendar, create alarms and reminders, send emails, send SMS, and much more! Feel free to explore the Agent mini-app for a list of all the possible agents.
Enabling and disabling agents
By default, any Agents that are enabled in the Agents mini-app are available for Layla (the character) to use. If you don't want Layla to access any agents, you can simply disable them by turning the switch off underneath the Agent icon.
You can attach Agents to your custom characters. In order to do this, go to the Advanced tab in the character creator:
Tap on the Select Agents button here, and a list of all available Agents will appear. You can select the ones you wish to attach to your character. Only the ones you select will be enabled.
Sometimes, you don't want your characters to access all agents for various reasons. Too many agents may confuse your character, or you wish this character to be specifically for roleplay, and you don't want to break the immersion by having them "search the web" in the middle of a session. Layla gives you full customisability to use Agents as you wish.
Quick note here: we refer to Layla as both the app as a whole and "Layla" as the default character, which is the main character identified by the butterfly logo. This is the character that is used if you don't create your own characters.
Creating your own agents
Layla gives you the ability to create your own tools and agents. These agents can be customised to fit your needs or integrate with your own services.
